McDermet hooked rugs on display in Marlboro

From abstract to figurative, hooked rugs by Beth McDermet surprise and delight. McDermet’s rugs are on view at the Marlboro Community Center (MCC) through Saturday, February 28, challenging preconceptions of what a hooked rug can be. All of the rugs in the exhibition are original designs. The design starts with a drawing, the design is then transferred to linen, and the hooking process begins.

McDermet has notes next to every rug in the show. “Doing Cartwheels” looks like a totally abstract image and is based on a photo from Hubble Telescope of the Cartwheel Galaxy. One of the most unusual hooked rugs in the exhibition is “Stained Glass Treasures,” a rug made of wool that interprets the light coming through a stained glass window, which is a creative challenge.

MCC is open on Wednesdays from 10 am to 6 pm; Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm; and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm.
