BDCC, VT Small Business Law Center offer virtual workshops for small business owners
The Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation (BDCC), in partnership with the Vermont Small Business Law Center, will host two educational workshops designed to help small business owners understand legal issues that commonly arise in day-to-day operations.
The virtual sessions will take place on Thursday, April 23, and Thursday, May 14, from 10 am to 12 pm. They are open to entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout Vermont and the region. These two workshops will help business owners understand common legal considerations, reduce risk, and explore options when challenges arise. Participants will learn directly from attorneys experienced in working with small businesses.
Business Contracts 101: Understanding Common Agreements will be held on Thursday, April 23. This session will cover foundational contract concepts and terms, key risk considerations, and practical guidance for small businesses looking at common contracts such as customer/job terms and conditions, MOUs, leases or sales agreements. Following a one-hour presentation, participants may sign up for a 15-minute breakout session for more specific questions in small groups or one-on-one. Participants are welcome to bring contracts that are being contemplated, with the understanding that education and information will be offered, but not legal advice relating to specific documents. Participants interested in the 15-minute breakout consultation during the second hour of the session must email Danielle Delaini at BDCC in advance at ddelaini@brattleborodevelopment.com. The email should include the subject line: “Contracts Workshop Breakout Request – April 23,” draft of the contract or agreement to be discussed, contact name, and name of business. Breakout sessions are limited and will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis. The second workshop is entitled “Understanding How to Collect Unpaid Debts as a Small Business,” and will be held on Thursday, May 14. The session will focus on how small businesses can exercise prevention strategies to avoid conflicts when collecting on receivables, as well as available options to collect, such as demand letters, mediation, negotiation, and small claims.
Participants may register for either or both sessions at https://bit.ly/1831-bdcc.
Registration secures access to the workshop presentations. Both workshops are offered free of charge as part of BDCC’s ongoing business technical assistance programming and partnership with regional resource providers. Email executivedirector@brattleborodevelopment.com with any questions.
