This Week in History: August 28 - September 4

The state highway department was finishing up repairs to the Route 9 bridge in the center of Wilmington.  The repairs began after Wilmington road crew members reported a small hole in the eastbound lane of the bridge.  An examination of the hole revealed a large cavity under the road.  State engineers said the hole was caused by the failure of a drainage system that was installed in the late 1930s during the construction of the bridge.
