Cheryl Ann Coburn, 75, of Route 100, West Wardsboro, VT, died early Wednesday morning, August 5, at the Jack Byrne Hospice Center, following a period of declining health.
Cheryl was born in Springfield, VT on September 17, 1950, the daughter of Donald and Sylvia (Decell) Ballantine. She was raised in the West River Valley area, attending school in Londonderry and Wardsboro, as well as Leland & Gray Seminary in Townshend.
For several years she worked part time on the weekends at Mount Snow, but most importantly she was a devoted homemaker whose life centered around her family. She was active civically, serving on both the Wardsboro School Board and the Vermont State Board of Education. Cheryl was known for her common-sense approach and dedication to educational issues and values. In town, she was one of the founding members of the Wardsboro Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
She enjoyed camping, travel, playing cards and the game of Scrabble, as well as time shared with her family and close friends. Cheryl will be remembered for her baking and cooking, especially her delicious baked beans, a recipe handed down through the family.
On November 4, 1967, in Jamaica, she was married to the love of her life, Francis Clement “Clem” Coburn, exchanging wedding vows during a simple ceremony for family and close friends. Clem predeceased her on May 7, 2019.
Survivors include her son, Clement Coburn, of Stratton; two daughters, Carrie Coburn, of West Wardsboro, and Colleen Boutin and her husband, Gary, of Middlebury; and two brothers, Roy Ballantine, of Wardsboro, and Rick Ballantine, of Dummerston. Additionally, she leaves two grandsons, Trenton and Wilder, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at the Stratton Town Hall, 9 West Jamaica Road, on Saturday, August 29, at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Robert Hescock Memorial Fishing Derby, c/o Melissa Hall, 51 Howard Road, Wardsboro, VT, 05355.
