Middle School TV boys’, girls’ teams dominate Wildcat invitational
The Twin Valley boys’ basketball team played in the finals of the 12th annual Wildcat Invitational on Saturday evening, January 31, in front of a large crowd. The team did not disappoint as they prevailed by a score of 41-27 over the Flood Brook Tigers.
The game was back and forth early on, with Flood Brook opening up an 8-4 lead after one quarter. The Wildcats clawed back in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing 14-11. The Wildcats made some halftime adjustments and came out strong in the third quarter behind some hot shooting and tenacious defense. Mikey Urquhart, Liam Keegan, and Gabe Walling all hit from long range, while Mason Vollinger scored five of his game-high 14 from the inside.
After three quarters, the Wildcats had turned the tables and led 28-23. The decisive fourth quarter was dominated by the inside presence of Avery Barnett and Vollinger, who controlled the boards, and great perimeter defense played by Brayden Sprague, Urquhart, Walling, and Keegan, who teamed up to keep Flood Brooks’ top scorers at bay. In the quarter, Urquhart hit for four, Vollinger for five, Keegan drained a three-pointer, and Walling contributed two while directing the offense. Vollinger led all the way with 14, followed by Walling with 12, Urquhart with seven, Keegan scoring six, and Barnett chipping in with a deuce. Rounding out the squad were Corey Dix and Abel Dornburgh.
The Twin Valley middle school girls’ basketball team extended their perfect season, capturing a tournament championship and improving their record to a flawless 10-0.
The streak continued Thursday as the Wildcats secured a decisive victory over Leland & Gray Union High School. In a rare and impressive display of team depth, every player on the Twin Valley roster contributed to the scoreboard. Brandy Holton and Avery Brown led the offensive charge as the game’s high scorers.
Building on that momentum, the team advanced to the championship game on Saturday against Mohawk Trail. The Wildcats’ defense and transition play proved too much for the opposition, resulting in a championship victory for Twin Valley. Avery Brown and Morgan O’Neil paced the team in scoring to seal the title.
With these two pivotal wins, the Wildcats remain unbeaten as they head into the final stretch of their season.
