Deerfield Valley Players announce auditions for upcoming musical
The Deerfield Valley Players, a local community theater based in Memorial Hall, will be holding auditions for “1776,” the 1969 Tony award-winning Broadway musical. The performances will be part of Wilmington’s 250th celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The play is an imaginative recreation of those momentous days between May 1 and July 4 in Philadelphia when the Continental Congress argued about, voted on, and finally signed the declaration.
There are 24 men’s roles and two women’s roles. Seven of the men’s roles are major singing roles, with four minor singing roles. All other male actors have speaking roles as members of the Continental Congress and are part of the chorus. Abigail Adams and Martha Jefferson are the two women’s roles. Women are also encouraged to audition for men’s roles.
The stage director will be Diana Stugger, Barbara Lipstadt will be the musical director, and John Iverson the technical director.
Auditions will be held on Sunday, March 29, from 2 to 5 pm and Monday, March 30, from 5 to 8 pm at OSEC (Old School Community Center), School Street. Contact Lipstadt for audition materials at barbaralipstadt@gmail.com.
Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays, July 24, 25, 31, and August 1, at 7 pm; and Sunday, July 26, at 2 pm.
