A month of shows at Bennington Theater
BENNINGTON - Bennington Theater, 331 Main Street, announces its June schedule of events.
Brooklyn-based comedian Jonathan van Halem performs on the Bennington Theater stage on Saturday, June 6, at 7:30 pm. Halem’s viral comedy clips—like the Depths of Wikipedia set and Top Straightest Moments series—have racked up millions of views. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 the day of the show.
“Much Ado About Nothing” will be performed Fridays, June 12 and 19, at 7 pm; Saturdays, June 13 and 20, at 7 pm; and Sundays, June 14 and 21, at 2 pm. Written by William Shakespeare and reimagined amid the fervor of the American Revolution, the play is set in Bennington, where the air buzzes with revolutionary spirit as the town celebrates its break from British rule. A new nation is being born, but the path forward is anything but simple. When a group of patriot soldiers arrives, two romances take shape. Young love blooms quickly between Claudio and Hero, only to be nearly destroyed by the schemes of Don John, a bitter secret Loyalist. Tickets are $25, $30 for premiere seating.
On Wednesday, June 17, at 7 pm, Blue Violin takes the stage for a one-night-only concert. The performance is a genre-bending tribute to classic rock, where live violin loops collide with smoke and light. The show features reimagings of works by AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Charlie Daniels Band, Led Zeppelin, and Kenny Loggins. Tickets start at $15.
Stephanie Phelan leads Improv After 5 on Thursday, June 18, at 6:30 pm. Improv is a great way to be creative, find the funny in just about anything, and share the joys of pure fun with other adults. No experience needed. Phelan begins with the very basics and guides the group through skills and games that build to whatever level the group is ready for. The goal is fun, there is no pressure to perform. Come early for a drink or snack; the bar opens at 6 and the workshop begins at 6:30. Price is $10.
Friday, June 26, at 7 pm, “IYBF!,” a musical comedy, will appear on the theater stage. Ray Conte was a well known songwriter and performer until he lost his wife. Five years into an extended drought without a single song, Conte finds himself in ever humbler circumstances as a glorified janitor heading an overnight crew at Sunlink Communications, high atop a Manhattan sky-scraper. Here he tries to find some inspiration. With the help of his crew Ray pirates Sunlink’s rooftop transmitter to broadcast his new live songs throughout the world.
The New Works Series: Staged Readings of Plays in Progress is in its fourth season at Bennington Theater. Local actors perform original new plays, scripts in hand, after only six hours of rehearsal. The plays may be staged or simply read aloud. “Long Journey Home,” a musical memoir, performed and written by Aron Bederson, will be performed on Sunday, June 28, at 2 pm. There is no charge to attend this performance.
