Collage and appliqué workshop at River Gallery School

Artist Deirdre Hyde
Costa Rican artist Deirdre Hyde, whose work is currently on view at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC), will lead a hands-on artmaking workshop, “Repurposing Fragments in Collage and Appliqué,” on Saturday, May 16, from 2 to 4 pm, at the River Gallery School, 32 Main Street, #201. Admission is $45, $35 for BMAC members. Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Register at brattleboromuseum.org or call (802) 257-0124, ext. 101.
Rather than emphasizing formal technique, the workshop will focus on working with reclaimed and meaningful materials, including pieces of past projects, personal mementos, and vintage textiles. Participants will experiment with fabric, stitching, and layered composition.
Some materials will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring fabric scraps, previous artworks, photographs or other textiles to incorporate into the compositions. The workshop is open to ages 16 and up.
Hyde’s BMAC exhibition, “Fragments of a Tropical Life,” on view through July 5, draws on four decades of sketches, woodcuts, screen prints, and lithographs the artist created at home in Costa Rica and then transformed into layered compositions. The resulting pieces evoke dense tropical ecosystems while reflecting intertwined personal and historical narratives of life, survival, and renewal.
BMAC is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is “pay as you wish.” The museum is wheelchair accessible. For more information and accessibility requests go to brattleboromuseum.org, call (802) 257-0124 or email office@brattleboromuseum.org.
