WILMINGTON- Wilmington Police and residents lined Main Street on Thursday evening, July 30, to greet a motorcade that was repatriating the remains of WWII US Army Air Forces PFC Bernard F. Sweet, 21, of Bennington. Sweet was a member of Headquarters Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group in the Philippines when Japanese forces invaded the islands in April, 1942. Sweet was captured and held at the Cabanatuan POW camp, where he was listed as having died of dysentery in October 1942, and buried in a common grave.
