Center for Photography offers classes, programs

The Vermont Center for Photography (VCP), 10 Green Street, announces its upcoming class offerings and programs.

Open portfolio night is one of VCP’s longest-running programs, happening monthly for nearly two decades. It’s a relaxed, welcoming evening where photographers and visual artists come together to share work, exchange ideas, and get thoughtful feedback in a supportive group setting. It will be offered next on Sunday, January 25, from 5 to 7 pm. Participants are encouraged to bring prints or projects, finished or in progress, to discuss with other like-minded creatives. All photographic styles, processes, and experience levels are welcome, and attendees are just as welcome to listen and take part in the conversation as to share work. It’s a great way to gain fresh perspectives, build confidence, and connect with a creative community. The program is free, open to all, and there is no registration or signup.
CORRECTION: Due to anticipated weather conditions, open portfolio night has been rescheduled to Sunday, February 1, from 5 to 7 pm.

Hand-coloring ink jet prints will be offered on Sunday, February 15, from 12 to 5 pm, taught by Frank Gorga. This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the process of hand coloring black-and-white photographic prints using Prismacolor colored pencils. The day will begin with a discussion on preparing and printing photographs specifically for hand coloring, followed by a demonstration of the instructor’s approach to tinting prints. Participants will experiment using five-inch-by-seven-inch prints before moving on to a final piece. Each student can expect to complete one to two finished hand-colored photographs on eight-inch-by-ten-inch paper by the end of the workshop. No prior experience is required, and all levels are welcome. The fee is $90 for members, $100 for nonmembers. To register go to https://vcphoto.org/hand-coloring-workshop/.

CMYK screenprinting will be offered on Sunday, March 22, from 10 am to 5 pm. This immersive, hands-on workshop introduces participants to CMYK screenprinting, the four-color process used to create full-color images through layered cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks. Presented in collaboration with Dan Chiaccio of First Proof Press, the workshop focuses on the physical craft of screenprinting and the unique visual qualities that emerge through ink, paper, and process. Participants will work directly with multiple screens, learning how to register and align layers, control ink density, and build up a finished print through successive passes. The workshop will explore how photographic and digital images translate into CMYK prints, emphasizing practical printing techniques, problem-solving at the press, and the rhythm of producing a small edition by hand. Expect a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and time to experiment.

Registration fees include all materials, inks, paper, and use of equipment. Participants are asked to submit a digital image at least one week prior to the workshop start date so screens can be prepared in advance, allowing the class to focus primarily on printing during the workshop itself. No prior screenprinting experience is required, and the workshop is well-suited for photographers, designers, and artists curious about expanding their practice into printmaking. The program fee is $225 for members, $250 for nonmembers. To register go to https://vcphoto.org/cmyk-screenprinting/.
