Club West presents a Cabaret for Humanity
On Wednesday, July 15, at 6 pm, Rock Against Racism will host “No to FIFA: A Cabaret for Humanity” at Club West, 880 Western Avenue. This event combines community discussion and live music addressing the political implications of the World Cup. The premier annual event of soccer, the world’s most popular sport, promises unity among the world’s disparate and diverse peoples. However, the corporatization and political economy of how the World Cup is administered often produces oppression of and division between disenfranchised people throughout the world.
“No to FIFA: A Cabaret for Humanity” seeks to inform the local community about this tension and discuss what bearing it has on humanity, both globally and locally.
This World Cup was supposed to be the first one operated within a human rights framework: key protections for workers, fans, players, and communities. Instead, the US administration’s immigration crackdown, discriminatory policies, and threats of denying freedom of the press mean the tournament risks being defined by these actions instead, making it a sportswashing service to the Trump administration.
The cabaret will begin with a facilitated discussion, followed by live music by local and visiting musicians. Suggested donation is $10, with no one turned away for lack of funds. For more information email rockagainstracismvt@gmail.com.
