1817 Meetinghouse restoration

ATHENS - The Athens Brick Meetinghouse Committee on behalf of the town will undertake an exciting project to bring a shine back to the exterior of the 1817 Meetinghouse. The work will include carpentry repair, window restoration, and painting of all wood surfaces, bringing the exterior of this historic gem back to her glory.
The Athens Brick Meetinghouse is historically significant to Windham County, and particularly the 12 surrounding towns, which comprised the “old Athens circuit” - Grafton, Rockingham, Townshend, Londonderry, Weston, Chester, Acton, Springfield, Landgrove, Windham, Putney, and Mt. Holly. Circuit riders from Athens traveled out to these towns to preach and perform other religious services. Quarterly camp meetings with congregants from these towns often lasted two days at this “mother church” in Athens.
This work is possible thanks in part to a grant from the National Park Service, in cooperation with Preservation Trust of Vermont, as well as the support of Athens taxpayers and funds raised through the Athens Historic Preservation Society.
