Vermont orchards open for fall

Proof that fall is in the air.

From Brattleboro to Burlington, Bennington to St. Johnsbury, and every corner of the state, the highly anticipated apple season in Vermont is here. The state is home to dozens of apple orchards, many offering unique or heirloom varieties not available in standard grocers, and offering a host of family-friendly activities to the public, according the Vermont Tree Fruit Growers Association (VTFGA), a nonprofit membership organization representing over 40 growers statewide.

The relatively short apple season in Vermont begins in August with most orchards open by Labor Day. While some orchards have extended seasons, most wrap up by mid-to-late October. Farms offer many ways to enjoy an afternoon in the vibrant fall foliage while supporting the local food system Vermont is known for. While offerings vary from farm to farm, most sell apples direct to the public through on-farm markets, which often include donuts, pies, pumpkins, and other local specialty products. Many also offer pick-your-own opportunities, their own sweet or hard cider, cafes, creamees, wagon rides, animals, and more.

This year, the organization is offering a digital passport program enticing visitors to experience as many orchards as possible throughout the state. At over a dozen Vermont orchards, visitors can scan a QR code to “stamp” a passport, with each stamp serving as an entry for sweepstakes prizes of up to $500. In addition, the first 20 people to visit at least five orchards will receive a $25 gift card, good at any participating orchard.

The annual Vermont Apple Photo Contest returns this year as well. All are invited to enter by submitting photographs taken at Vermont orchards by tagging and following @vermontapples on Instagram. Three winners will be selected in mid-October to win gift cards redeemable at orchards throughout Vermont.
