Food 4 Kids thanks the community
To the Editor:
On behalf of the children in the Valley I want to thank the voters of Dover and the Dover Select Board for supporting our Food 4 Kids program with a most generous donation. In addition we have had sizable donations from the Lions, Rotary, Ladies Benevolent Association, Mount Snow Ski Club, as well as individual donations. These funds will cover the expense of buying food for about half of the school year for needy children in Dover, Wardsboro, and Twin Valley Elementary schools. Each Friday, identified children take home a bag of nonperishable food for the weekend. It is hard to believe that there are children who are hungry on weekends when they are not in school and able to receive the food they need.
This program has been in place for ten years and over that time we have delivered bags that provided 19,200 meals to hungry children. This food is purchased by volunteers, delivered to the schools, and distributed by the principals to families who choose to participate. Each bag costs close to $5 at today’s prices.
Please contact Barbara Hyde, hydeaway@sover.net with any questions. We will again be starting the program as schools reopen this fall.
