History museum has new exhibit

MONTPELIER- The state’s story is shared, celebrated, and preserved by the over 190 local historical societies and museums found in all corners of the state. Working hard, often only with volunteers and excellent apple pie recipes, these organizations foster a sense of community that bridges generations, provides a sense of place, and helps define Vermont’s unique identity.
“Lively & Local: Historical Societies in Vermont,” a new exhibition at the Vermont History Museum, explores the work of these essential community organizations through images and stories curated by a selection of participants from around the state.
Dedicated stewards of shared experiences, local historical societies and museums serve an essential community role, and this exhibit seeks to communicate the value and necessity of this task.
The Vermont Historical Society provides support for local historical societies through newsletters, roundtable discussions and workshops, listservs, and community outreach. Chartered in 1838, the Vermont Historical Society is a private, nonprofit organization that engages both Vermonters and “Vermonters at heart” in the exploration of the state’s rich history.
