Discussion looks at Hollywood blacklist

Rick Winston

BRATTLEBORO - Film scholar Rick Winston will present a program on the Hollywood blacklist at the Hooker-Dunham Theater on Friday, November 19, at 7:30 pm. For more information visit hookerdunham.org/the-hollywood-       blacklist.
The blacklist was the best-known cultural manifestation of what is now known as the McCarthy Era or the Red Scare. It resulted in hundreds of Hollywood actors, writers, and directors losing their livelihoods, from 1947 to the early 1960s. According to Winston, the roots of the blacklist lay in the labor organizing battles of the 1930s and 1940s, with powerful studio heads pitted against left-leaning screenwriters. Winston believes that, as institutions have come under attack in recent years, there are lessons to be learned from this history. He will illustrate the talk with clips from 12 films, including “On the Waterfront,” “High Noon,” and “Salt of the Earth.”
