Riders in the 2019 Hungry Lion Bike Tour enjoyed spectacular fall colors.
WHITINGHAM - The Hungry Lion Bike Tour is back. Now in its 11th year, this Lions Club fundraiser welcomes cyclists, walkers, and virtual participants to help raise money to fight hunger in the valley. In-person cyclists will ride on Saturday, September 24; everyone else can choose their own schedules.
For those who cycle, the HLBT features tours from 5 to 75 miles. All rides start from Town Hill in Whitingham and take cyclists through beautiful fall foliage, with rest stops along the way serving snacks, water, and juice. Van support is provided to assist riders with bike problems or to give a lift on those challenging hills. In-person walkers will have a choice of two hiking routes.
After the tour, participants will enjoy a celebration at Town Hill with live music, a loaded baked potato bar with meat and vegetarian toppings, cold beverages, goody bags, and prizes.
In addition to being southern Vermont’s premier cycling event, the Hungry Lion Bike Tour is also one of the Deerfield Valley’s most successful charity events, raising over $250,000 since its inception. All funds raised are donated locally, mainly to help fight hunger in the valley. The $50 HLBT registration fee will remain unchanged. Participants are encouraged to line up friends, family, and co-workers to make pledges online through the popular bikereg.com website. This easy-to-use platform also lets participants track their fundraising totals in real time and enjoy friendly competition with friends and rivals. Just log on and create a page or search for a friend to sponsor.
For 2022, in place of the usual bike jersey, the HLBT is giving away artist-designed bike vests to all participants who raise $275 or more. As always the Deerfield Valley Lions will recognize select participants through the club’s Facebook and web pages.
