Business losses from Tropical Storm Irene in Wilmington and Dover were said to top $8.5 million. The estimate included more than $4.1 million in building damage, $2.2 million in equipment damage, $1.2 million in lost inventory, and $1.1 million in lost business. Not all businesses were able to provide estimates. The Federal Emergency Management Administration pledged to support the area’s recovery with a long-term economic development planning program.
