War Powers Resolution now needed
To the Editor:
Our senators, Peter Welch and Bernie Sanders, and our representative, Becca Balint, have been in the forefront of the awakening of Democratic senators and congresspeople to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. In July, Bernie and Peter cosponsored Joint Resolutions of Disapproval (JRD) to block the sales of weapons to Israel.
We applaud their leadership, but just today, a United Nations commission of inquiry found that Israel has, indeed, committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Clearly more needs to be done to stop United States’ complicity in this horror. All of us in Vermont must push Becca, Peter, and Bernie to introduce a privileged War Powers Resolution—resolutions which must be argued on the floor—to completely stop American participation in these hostilities, a participation which is not only immoral but in contravention of the Constitution and the Foreign Assistance Act.
As more and more Americans become appalled at our support for these inhuman acts, Action Corps and other humanitarian organizations are urging us to urge our senators and representatives to keep fighting for real peace, and divorce itself entirely from the lawless government of Israel.
